Bobby Broom

Guitarist Bobby Broom is an icon in the world of jazz guitarists. Bobby was the first and only guitar player ever to become a member of Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers, which he joined along with childhood friend Wynton Marsalis. His later work included stints with Sonny Rollins, Tom Browne, Kenny Garrett, Dr. John, Dizzy Gillespie and Stanley Turrentine. Born in Harlem and raised on the Upper West Side of NYC, Bobby took up guitar at 12 and five years later, made his first appearance with Sonny Rollins at Carnegie Hall. He went on to tour and record with Rollins in 1981-86. By the time he was 21, Bobby had debuted as a leader with Clean Sweep (GRP). He relocated to Chicago later in the decade, working with Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrentine, Charles Earland, Miles Davis, and Dr. John. Bobby has been active as a jazz educator, most recently for six years on the faculty of depaul University, the Thelonious Monk Institute and Ravinia Festival Organization. He began the new millennium by refocusing on his own music, especially his Bobby Broom Trio and the Deep Blue Organ Trio, and has recorded with both for the Origin label. Bobby rejoined Rollins’s band in 2005 and was featured on the saxophonist’s Grammy-nominated cds Sonny, Please and Road Shows, Volume 1.
