LA-based bassist Christoph Luty is a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio, appearing in the US, Japan, and Europe in concerts, clubs, and festivals. He has collaborated with artists like Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Diana Krall, Clark Terry, Dave Brubeck, James Moody and Shirley Horn, among others. Christoph has recorded with Milt Jackson, John Pizzarelli, Diana Krall and more. He has appeared nationally with such artists as Dena DeRose, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, Curtis Stigers, Bill Watrous, Anthony Wilson, Jeff Clayton, Bill Cunliffe, and Howlett Smith. Known for his melodic bass lines and solos, a big, natural sound and articulate arco playing, Christoph moved to LA from Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1990 to further his career. According to mentor John Clayton, “Christoph’s playing exemplifies…swinging bass lines, lyrical solos, and a great natural sound that is huge and full.” All About Jazz writes, “Bassist Christoph Luty has a fat sound and an unerring sense of melody.” A review of his CD “It’s Good To Be Seen” drew comments from Jazz Player Magazine, “Christoph Luty’s arco bass playing ability is remarkable… exceptionally in tune with a centered tone.” The Capital-Journal wrote of a performance with the Jeff Hamilton Trio, “Luty ‘sang’ with a rich sound recalling the sonorous lower register of jazz bass great Ray Brown.” He earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California. |
