First-prize winner in the 1988 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, Ted Rosenthal has had a prolific recording career, releasing 11 CDs as a leader. His “One Night in Vermont” CD with legendary trombonist Bob Brookmeyer received praise from All About Jazz, “…a stunning album complete with all of jazz’s beloved nuances….” His solo album “The 3 Bs” is striking in its original improvisations on Beethoven themes. Ted has toured with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, was a sideman with the Art Farmer Quintet, and has performed with the Jon Faddis, Benny Golson, and James Moody Quartets, among others. He is the pianist of choice for vocalists that include Helen Merrill, Mark Murphy, and Ann Hampton Callaway. He has performed with Wynton Marsalis, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. The three-time National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient performed his concerto for piano and orchestra “The Survivor” with the Manhattan Jazz Philharmonic and the Rockland Symphony Orchestra. Classical/jazz crossover performances include solo and featured appearances with the Boston Pops, Baltimore Symphony, and Rochester Philharmonic, among others. Ted received both his Bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. Active in jazz education, he teaches at Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School and presents jazz clinics worldwide. He has published piano arrangements and feature articles for Piano Today and the Piano Stylist and is a contributing editor for Piano and Keyboard magazine. |
