Entering his senior year this fall at Atlee High School in the Richmond, VA area, Calvin began playing the sax in middle school along with the bassoon, both of which he continues to play, but it was the piano that captured him musically, beginning in 2001 first with classical music and then jazz. Besides playing piano in his high school Jazz Band, he also plays the bassoon in its Wind Ensemble and he is a member of the Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band. Last year he won the Citywide Talent Competition in Richmond and this year he won the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Piano Jazz Competition. Calvin also plays weekly for his church Mount Olive Baptist Church and also at St. Paul’s Baptist Church. An honor roll student, Calvin is enrolled in advance placement courses at school, but has time to play local gigs. One of his goals for the Workshop is “how to make the notes I play sing".
