Workshop Alumni Happenings Jan 19, 2022

Congratulations to Summer Camargo (2018 trumpet) and Skylar Tang (2021 trumpet), 2022 Jazz Education Network (JEN) Award recipients! Camargo is among five jazz artists ages 18-29 to receive the honor in the 2022 Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Jazz Combo competition, which includes performing in JEN’s Sisters in Jazz quintet. Tang is among six winners in the 2022 Young Composer Showcase, in which an original composition is recognized and performed at an international level.

 

Trumpeter Alphonso Horne (2004) performs with David Ostwald & The Louis Armstrong Eternity Band at Birdland (NYC) on January 19.

 

Postponed: 2002 piano alum Gerald Clayton’s January performances of Symphonic Ellington: New World A-Comin’ with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA will be rescheduled on dates to be determined.

 

Trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (2001 trumpet) performs at Studio Be for the Prospect.5 Gala in New Orleans, January 22-23. Scott aTunde Adjuah is featured on “Musica,” one of two new tracks released by the New Orleans brass band The Soul Rebels as a bonus addition to its 2019 album, Poetry in Motion. And the Black Genius Foundation has named him a member of the inaugural Black Genius Brain Trust, committed to ensuring that the intellectual and creative genius of Black artists, arts professionals, and arts organizations is celebrated, amplified, and sustained.

 

Saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown (2007) holds an Artist Residency January 25-28 at the San Francisco Conservatory.

 

Anthony Hervey (2014 trumpet) appears at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando FL on January 26, performing Duke Ellington’s “Black, Brown & Beige” and Sacred Music.

 

Pianist Micah Thomas (2013) and bassist Daryl Johns (2011) form part of the Immanuel Wilkins quartet, which releases the album The 7th Hand on January 28, with special guest Elena Pinderhughes (2011) on flute. Check out “Emanation/Don’t Break” from the new release. The quartet starts touring that day at The Side Door Jazz Club in Old Lyme, CT, followed by performances at Harlem Stage (NYC) on January 29 and at The Falcon in Marlboro NY on January 30.

 

1997 piano alum Robert Glasper performs at The Vermont Hollywood (LA) on January 30, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the release of Black Radio, his critically acclaimed fifth studio album.

 

The 64th annual Grammy Awards Ceremony in LA will be postponed from January 31 (new date TBA) due to surging cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Pianist Isaiah J. Thompson (2014), touring with The John Pizzarelli Trio, performs at Birdland (NYC) on February 1.

 

Hailey Niswanger (2007 saxophone) composed, directed, and kicks off a performance for the Roland instrument maker in this video touting its newly introduced Aerophone AE-20, a digital wind instrument.

 

1997 saxophone alum Terrace Martin co-produced From A Birds-Eye View, the newly-released sophomore album by rap performer Cordae.
