Vocalist Samara Joy, who performed to a packed and enthusiastic crowd at Vail Square during
the Vail Jazz Festival on August 4, 2022, has announced her Verve Records debut album, Linger
Awhile. The album, due out on September 16, features 1999 Workshop bass alum David Wong,
who will return for the Vail Jazz Party this Labor Day weekend as a member of the Workshop
Alumni Sextet. You can hear Joy’s soon-to-be-released album’s lead single, “Can’t Get Out of
This Mood,” here.


2016 trombone alum Joe Giordano and 2018 trumpet alum Summer Camargo were two of the
16 young musicians recently selected as Betty Carter Jazz Ahead 2022 Participants. The
program provides a two-week residency at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC and is led by
the center’s artistic director, pianist Jason Moran. Congratulations Joe and Summer!


Vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant’s “Synergy Under the Influence” concert at The Conrad’s
SummerFest in La Jolla CA on August 17 includes works from her new album, Ghost Song, and
features Sullivan Fortner (2002 piano) as a member of her quintet.


2014 trumpet alum Anthony Hervey is on tour with singer Michael Buble, performing on
August 18 at Madison Square Garden in NYC, and on August 29 at Capital One Arena in
Washington DC.


Pianist Isaiah J. Thompson (2014) has a multi-night gig with the Willie Jones III Sextet, August
18-21, at Dizzy’s Club in NYC.


2008 saxophone alum Grace Kelly is busy on a CD-release tour, with the following performance
dates: August 19 at the Hanover Theatre and Conservatory in Worcester MA during
Worcester’s “Jazz at Sunset” series; August 20 at Infinity Hall in Hartford CT; August 21 at Caffe
Lena in Saratoga Springs NY; August 23 at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old
Saybrook CT; August 24 at Wequasset Resort and Golf Club in Harwich MA; August 25 at City
Winery in Boston; August 26 at Spire Center for Performing Arts in Plymouth MA; August 27 at
Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport MA; and August 28 at Lee Congregational Church in
Lee MA. Whew! The CD is titled All That I Need.

2003 saxophone alum Neil Welch performs with the Jazz Punishments Big Band on August 21 in Summer Concerts at City Park in Edmonds WA


Saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown (2007) continues touring with trumpeter Chris Botti,
stopping at Yardley Hall in Overland Park KS on August 24; at Fraze Pavilion in Kettering OH on
August 26; and at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Petoskey MI on August 27.


Benny Benack III (2008 trumpet) performs at Hudson Riverfront PAC in Weehawken NJ on
August 24 and in a jam session at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC later that night. Benack also appears
in a quartet with vocalist Mar Vilaseca at Chris’s Jazz Café in Philadelphia on August 27, and on
August 31 in a “Sinatra Under the Stars” performance at 74 Wythe in Kings County NY followed
by another jam session at Smalls that night.


2013 trumpet alum John Michael Bradford + The Vibe perform at the Ace Hotel in New Orleans
on August 26.


The second of saxophonist Charles Lloyd’s three thematically-related trio albums, Trios: Ocean,
will be released on August 26 and features 2002 piano alum Gerald Clayton.


Drummer Mike Mitchell (2011), aka Blaque Dynamite, performs at TV Eye in Ridgewood NY on
August 30.


Pianist Micah Thomas (2013) is in the trio accompanying Billy Drummond on the drummer’s
recently released album Valse Sinistre. Listen to Thomas here on “Frankenstein.”


Pianist Robert Glasper (1997) is featured on guitarist/vocalist Ari Joshua’s newly-released
single, “Contact,” which you can listen to here.


Saxophonist Rocky Yera (2000) is featured on a new song, “Swimming Through Air,” released by
