Workshop Alumni Happenings July 2 – July 15, 2024

2010 bass alum Russell Hall performs with his wife, world-renowned tap dancer Michela Marino Lerman, on consecutive weekends during the Green Box Arts Festival at the Sallie Bush Community Building in Green Mountain Falls CO (near Colorado Springs). The program in which they perform, “A World of Dance, A Variety of Rhythms,” is held on the evenings of July 5 and 6 and the afternoon of July 7, as well as on the evenings of July 12 and 13 and the afternoon of July 14; more info is available here.


Other Performances


Curtis Taylor (2001 trumpet), who recently released Taylor Made as a bandleader (listen here to the album’s opening track, “Khan’s Dilemma,”) performs during the Just Jazz Live music series at The Parramount in LA on July 3. Then he’s got a July 5 gig with singer Leonard Patton at the Jazz Lounge in San Diego. On July 6, Taylor’s quintet takes the stage at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad CA.


Trumpeter Benny Benack III (2008) leads a jam session at Smalls in NYC on July 3. He rings in Independence Day with two shows in different venues: in the afternoon he and trumpeter Bria Skonberg perform a “Sing & Swing” concert; and that night he’s got a quartet performance at Birdland in NYC. Then Benack takes the quartet to Massachusetts, where they’ve got a July 6 gig at Gallery on Main, in Falmouth; and a July 7 gig at The Music Room in West Yarmouth. Benack then has a multi-night engagement, July 7-13, at Vic’s Lounge in Las Vegas with a quintet featuring vocalist and bandleader Christian Wiggs. And you can catch him, with Bria Skonberg again, at Jazz Aspen Snowmass’s Summer Café Series on the rooftop of the Aspen Art Museum in Aspen CO, on July 14.


2013 trombone alum Jeffery Miller is on stage with the Jonas Brothers for a performance at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo UT on July 4.


Drummer Cindy Blackman Santana and her band, which includes Zaccai Curtis (1999) on piano, is on tour, with a July 4 stop at Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club in Portsmouth NH; a multi-night gig at Keystone Korner in Baltimore, July 5-7; and then a stay at Birdland in NYC, July 9-13.


The Parrish Art Museum, in Water Mill NY, has Summer Camargo (2018 trumpet) and her quintet on July 5 during the Summer Jazz on the Terrace series presented by Hamptons JazzFest in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center.


Khris Royal (2004 saxophone) anchors The Point in performances on July 5 and 11 at d.b.a. in New Orleans.


Saxophonist Braxton Cook (2009) appears at The NorVa in Norfolk VA on July 6.


1999 saxophone alum Lakecia Benjamin performs on July 6 at the Iowa City Jazz Festival in Iowa City.


1997 trumpet alum Keyon Harrold’s Foreverland band has a July 6 show at the LA County Museum of Art in LA.


Lucianna Padmore (1997) is on the drums with the David Janeway Quartet on July 7 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hastings-On-Hudson NY.


2007 drums alum Bryan Carter takes the stage at the Brubeck Jazz Summit, July 7-13 at Classical Tahoe in Incline Village NV.


Evan Sherman (2009 drums) takes his Big Band to Birdland in NYC on July 8 and then to Jazz on the Back Deck of the Morris Museum in Morris Township NJ on July 13.


The Alexa Tarantino (saxophone) Quartet, with 2008 alum Raviv Markovitz on bass, has a show at the Arthur Zankel Music Center in Saratoga Springs (NY) on July 9.


Saxophonist Nii Akwei (Adoteye) and the 11th Hour Quintet, with Theljon Allen (2000) on trumpet, are at Keystone Korner in Baltimore on July 10.


Alphonso Horne (2004 trumpet) & The Gotham Kings perform at 140 Broadway in NYC on July 10 during a free lunchtime concert series.


Drummer Craig Hill (2005) performs on July 10 at Café Erzulie in Brooklyn NY.


2015 saxophone alum Alex Laurenzi presents an Island Beach summer show on July 11 at 270 Boulevard in Mountain Lakes NJ.


Saxophonist Grace Kelly lights up the Festival of Arts Summer Concert Series, Concerts on the Green, on July 13 in Laguna Beach CA.




Percussionist Carlos Nino & Friends have released the album Placenta, which includes Jamire Williams (2001 drums) on this track, “Some Rest for the Midwives.”


Pianist/accordionist Sam Reider and his acoustic band’s new album, The Golem and Other Tales, features Eddie Barbash (2005) on saxophone. Listen here to “A Mysterious Stranger with an Extraordinary Idea.”
